Spellbroken - Patch #109
A few nerfs this week, aimed at addressing some metagame issues and specific outliers. In particular, we’ve been observing the rise of certain Agility decks, especially Wisdom & Agility decks in the current meta. These changes should make some of these decks' key cards more manageable.
Changes ⚙️
- Increased bot intelligence for lower level players.
- Ranking up between subdivisions of ranks now grants a bonus 100 XP.
Bugfixes 🐛
- Fixed a bug where you couldn't view the new Cardback in-game if you owned both Cardbacks 🤭
- Fixed a bug where the card selection wouldn't scale and move properly with the deck sidebar open.
- Fixed a bug where claimed Skypass rewards would show the wrong card grade.

Definitely the boogeyman of the metagame and the most talked about card for the past few weeks. While Soulpyre Titan did not possess an egregious winrate, we recognize the importance of curtailing cards which create unenjoyable play patterns, and Titan definitely falls into that category. We’re taking such a heavy handed approach to Soulpyre Titan not because we want to invalidate it, but because we feel it will remain viable in spite of this nerf. A 0 mana 7/7 Wither that becomes active simply by playing the game and losing health should still have a home in the metagame, albeit a slightly less ubiquitous one.

Nerfing an overperformer. We’ve heard some mixed feedback about the “Second Wind” or “Bloodied” mechanic that Dash for the Cup uses, where it becomes stronger when its player drops to 16 or less health. However, we’ve heard few to no complaints about other cards with the mechanic like Turboboost and Drone Surge. As the balance issue seems to be more with Dash for the Cup, we’ve nerfed it by removing the +1/+1 boost on the Unit(s) it summons. This is a somewhat heavy-handed nerf, so we’ll be keeping an eye on it.

In the same manner as Secrets, Dreamcalling allowed for early power spikes due to being fueled by elements in the hand, so we’ve given it +1 cost and adjusted its effect to count elements in the grave, rather than the hand.

One recurring theme problematic cards generally share is their ability to subvert the cost curve by being cast too early, or cheating other threatening cards or effects into play prematurely. This is a somewhat endemic issue we’ll be addressing moving forward to reduce the possibility of runaway games. At this time, several Wisdom cards that reduce in cost or scale in power relative to the number of elements in your hand have proven be dangerous, as they can be very powerful in the early turns of the game if you high roll. To this end, we’re raising Secrets back to 7 cost, having it grant 1 health less to the targeted unit, and adjusting its effect to mirror Skychannel, where it looks at elements in the player’s graveyard, rather than hand to determine its cost reduction. This makes it slower, but allows it to scale more smoothly over the course of the game, rather than spiking early, which is more in line with the methodical, long term game plan Wisdom is meant to embody.
Grover (2033)

With the changes to Secrets and Calling, it seemed a good time to rein in Grover’s effect to only discard four units, rather than eight, similar to the Nakamoto and Burn Out changes. Thus Grover has more payoffs available, but less extreme power-spiking potential.
Glizzy (20060)

A rather sizable nerf to a token card and Glizzbot by extension. The Glizzy that Glizzbot creates were becoming a bit of a problem in the current metagame, and were generally unbalanced at 1 mana, so we’ve raised them to 2c, maintaining the overall theme and effect of Glizzbot, but reducing the speed at which buffs can be applied by a fairly significant margin.
Spellbreaker (4123)

A bit of a preemptive nerf here to Spellbreaker, raising her to eight cost to make playing her a bit more of a commitment. Currently, Spellbreaker is not a particularly problematic card, but we have heard a lot of feedback expressing frustration about the play patterns it supports. To this end, we’ve slowed it down slightly. At the same time, we do feel that powerful finisher cards like Spellbreaker that can help close games are a net positive for the game, as we don’t want players to become locked into prolonged late game stalemates, so having powerful finishers is valuable.
